</p><p>Die Erkrankung kann als ausgeprägte Form der Pachyonychie (Angeborene oder erworbene Verdickung des Nagels) angesehen werden.<sup id="cite_ref-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p><a href="Synonyme" class="mw-redirect" title="Synonyme">Synonyme</a> sind: <i>Krummnagel; Krallennagel; <span style="font-style:normal;font-weight:normal"><a href="Englische_Sprache" title="Englische Sprache">englisch</a></span> <span lang="en-Latn" style="font-style:italic">Ram's horn nails</span></i>
</p><p>Hauptmerkmal ist ein stark verdickter, oft gelb oder bräunlich verfärbter, krallenartig gebogener harter Nagel überwiegend an der Großzehe älterer Menschen. <p>Eine angeborene Onychogrypose (selten) wird als Onychogryphosis congenita bezeichnet. Bei zwei Familien waren alle 20 Nägel betroffen.<sup id="cite_ref-6" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-7" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-7"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>7<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Häufiger ist isoliert der <a href="Kleinzeh" class="mw-redirect" title="Kleinzeh">Kleinzeh</a> verändert, symptomlos und ohne medizinische Bedeutung.<sup id="cite_ref-8" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-8"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>8<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

<p>Die Behandlung besteht in der Vermeidung oder Beseitigung der auslösenden Ursache. Da normales Schneiden kaum möglich ist, werden die Nägel mit einer Nagelfräse auf normale Form und Dicke abgeschliffen.
